Play-Doc, which will hold its 19th edition from 26 April to 1 May in the city of Tui, announces the films that will make up the this year’s feature and short film competitions. The programme includes works by prestigious filmmakers, as well as works by emerging directors. All the films in competition are Spanish premieres.
The renowned North American filmmaker John Gianvito will present his latest work The Grave’s Sky (2023) at this new edition of Play-Doc. Alongside him, two works by the prestigious French director Jean-Claude Rousseau will also be screened: Welcome (2022) and Souvenir D’Athènes. Likewise, the Italian director Fabrizio Ferraro will present I morti rimangono con la bocca aperta, co-produced in Spain by Eddie Saeta. Chilean director Diego Acosta will participate with Al amparo del cielo (2022). Also on show in the international competition category will be Ame No Uta by Japanese director Tetsuichiro Tsuta, and Mourir à Ibiza (un film en trois étés) by the very young French directors Anton Balekdjian, Léo Couture and Mattéo Eustachon. Belgian filmmaker Isabelle Tollenaere will present The Fruit Tree and finally, Marina Lameiro from Navarre will participate with her film Krutxalteanik Uronarat, which she will present in its world premiere.
The international jury responsible for awarding the prizes in the international categories will be composed of the celebrated Portuguese filmmaker Rita Azevedo Gomes, the Indian filmmaker and archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur and Hayet Benkara, a French-born, Europe and Canada-based curator and expert on international industry and co-production markets.
Renowned professionals from the international film world for the Play-Doc 2023 online programme of roundtables
Coordinated by Argentinean film critic and programmer Roger Koza, Play-Doc will hold a series of virtual meetings that will bring together renowned professionals from around the world, from filmmakers, artists and programmers to academics, archivists and film critics.
These roundtables, which will be accessible online during the festival, will speak to and around various issues related to the film industry: festivals, audiences, training spaces, production dynamics, exhibition and the need for preservation.
The professionals participating in this edition will be: Paula Félix-Didier, director of the Museo del Cine de Buenos Aires, teacher, researcher and renowned specialist in conservation, restoration and archiving of audiovisual media. Jurij Meden, Slovenian filmmaker, critic and programmer, editor-in-chief of the international magazine KINO!, Haden Guest, programmer, film producer and director of the Harvard Film Archive in the US. Ignacio Agüero, one of Chile’s most renowned documentary filmmakers, as well as Argentinean directors Gustavo Fontán, Jonathan Perel, and Chinese filmmaker and choreographer Zhang Mengqi. |
