The 19th edition of Play-Doc, International Film Festival, Tui, now has its official list of winners. Al amparo del cielo by Chilean director Diego Acosta has won the Play-Doc Award 2023 for the international competition.
The international jury, composed of the renowned Portuguese filmmaker Rita Azevedo Gomes, the Indian filmmaker and archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur and Hayet Benkara, curator and expert on international industry and co-production markets, have decided to award the prize of the 19th edition to the film Al amparo del cielo by Diego Acosta, a film “constructed in the dark space that subsists between life and representation, by images of a deep black from where the light of a primordial fire bursts forth, with which man traverses the seasons of life. The survival of man, of Art and of cinema itself, under the protection of the sky.”
It also decided to award a special mention to Mourir à Ibiza (un film en trois étés) by the French filmmakers Anton Balekdjian, Léo Couture and Mattéo Eustachon for the portrait “at once tender and sad, like the melodies that run through it, like the ends of summer of a group of young people, friends adrift, both in life and in their affections and in the making of this first film, which nevertheless dares to take risks with singular cinematographic proposals. Mourir à Ibiza is a film made hand in hand, with a promising future.”
Play-Doc’s official list of winners is completed with the award in the Galicia competitive section. The jury, made up of the French artist and filmmaker Joséphine Derobe, the film critic and programmer of the Filmoteca de Galicia, Jaime Pena, and the producer Andrea Queralt, has decided to award Devociones by Angel Montero and Maria Serna “for exploring the limits of the sensorial both on a material and sonorous level and portraying healing rituals in a carnal and subtle way.”
In the Galicia competition, the jury also awarded a special mention to the film Los saldos by Raúl Capdevila “for its honest and sincere portrayal of the family and intergenerational reality of the rural world of Aragon.”
