The festival in Tui supports Galician talent through initiatives such as VENTURA, while also offering professional training and industry activities focused on international co-production, artificial intelligence and sound in cinema
From April 29 to May 3, the town of Tui will host the twenty-second edition of Play-Doc, International Film Festival. Over five days, the festival will bring together filmmakers, industry professionals and audiences in a programme that includes screenings, concerts, expanded cinema, masterclasses and a range of activities focused on professional development and reflection on the audiovisual sector.
VENTURA supports seven Galician projects
VENTURA is an initiative launched by Play-Doc focused on the training and development of audiovisual projects, culminating in a meeting space with industry professionals. As part of the festival, the final stage of its fourth edition will take place, featuring seven Galician filmmakers: Lucía Estévez, Nela Fraga, Xacio Baño, Mateo Kesselman, Aira Portos, César Souto and Xiana do Teixeiro, whose projects reflect the diversity and vitality of contemporary cinema in Galicia.
Following a period of training and mentoring with international professionals, the teams will present their projects to producers, distributors, festival programmers and sales agents through pitching sessions and one-to-one meetings, with the aim of fostering opportunities for funding, co-production and international circulation.
International co-production: dialogue between institutions
The festival will host a meeting with representatives of public institutions from Galicia, Spain and Portugal, including AGADIC (Regional Government of Galicia), ICAA (Spanish Ministry of Culture) and ICA (Portuguese Ministry of Culture), to discuss how public bodies support audiovisual collaboration between territories. The session will focus on existing funding frameworks and support mechanisms, as well as on how they foster connections between professionals. Conceived as an open space for exchange, the meeting aims to strengthen links, share experiences and open new avenues for collaboration.
Artificial intelligence and cinema: opportunities and challenges
As part of the festival, a masterclass on artificial intelligence in contemporary cinema will be given by filmmaker, researcher and lecturer Jorge Caballero, who specialises in the relationship between cinema and artificial intelligence and is co-founder of the audiovisual laboratory Artefacto. Through specific examples, the session will explore how these technologies are beginning to intervene in different stages of the audiovisual process, from project development to editing and archival work. The session will also open a discussion on questions such as authorship, image-making and changes in creative processes.
Sound in cinema: a key element
In connection with the live presentation of the project Krakatoa, the festival will organise a public talk on the role of sound in cinema, featuring filmmaker Carlos Casas and composer and sound engineer Nicolas Becker, Academy Award winner for Sound of Metal. Drawing on their experience, they will discuss how sound is constructed in a film and its importance in the creation of atmosphere and emotion.
Sound cartography: community filmmaking workshop
Also focused on sound, Play-Doc is organising a new edition of its community filmmaking workshop, aimed at residents of Tui and the surrounding area. On this occasion, the workshop will explore the sound landscape. Led by the renowned Galician filmmaker Eloy Domínguez Serén, the workshop invites participants to use cinema as a tool for expression through listening. Through the creation of short audiovisual pieces, participants will discover new ways of seeing, listening to and capturing their environment. The resulting works will be presented during the festival.
In the coming weeks, the festival will announce the rest of the programme for this new edition, once again positioning Tui as a meeting point for contemporary cinema and audiovisual creation.
