Paulo Honório – who wanders through the interior of Brazil dealing in hammocks, cattle, holy cards, rosaries and trinkets – snatches the S. Bernardo estate from the hands of its inept owner and future employee Luís Padilha. Along the way, he learns to put men in their place, as if they were things. However, when he marries Madalena, whom he wishes to possess completely, everything falls apart, as his difficulty in rationalising love will challenge his vision of the world. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Graciliano Ramos, this masterpiece of Brazilian cinema is considered by many to be one of the greatest Latin American films of all time.
