Leon Hirszman’s first film, Pedreira de São Diogo, is one of the episodes of 5 vezes favela, a series of short films made by the Cultural Research Centre of the National Students’ Union (CPC) in the early 1960s. Supposedly influenced by Eisenstein’s montage theories, and marked by a strong political idealism, the episode follows the drama experienced by the workers in a Rio quarry when ordered to intensify explosions, something that would endanger the lives of the inhabitants of the favela, high up on the hill.
