Set in 19th-century Sweden, The Phantom Carriage tells the story of David Holm, a hardened alcoholic who dies on New Year’s Eve. According to an old legend, the last sinner to die before midnight is doomed to drive the ghostly carriage that collects the souls of the dead for a year. Through a series of supernatural visions, Holm relives pivotal moments of his life, confronting his cruelty toward his wife and his disdain for others, including Edit, a young woman dying of tuberculosis who tried to redeem him.
