Eles não usam black-tie brings us closer to the conflicts, contradictions and desires of the Brazilian working class in the late 1970s, during the final crisis of the military dictatorship. Based on a play of the same name by Gianfrancesco Guarnieri written in 1950, the film adopts a realistic narrative that proposes antagonistic solutions for the lives of the workers. On the one hand, hope for collective action and on the other hand, a commitment to individual solutions. The plot is poignantly built around the conflict between a unionist father, Otávio, and his alienated son, Tião, reflecting the effects of the struggle for survival within a working-class family. Eles não usam black-tie was a critical and commercial success, and received several awards, including the Golden Lion (Special Jury Prize, ex-aequo) and FIPRESCI and OCIC awards at Venice in 1981.
