A film about the victims of fifty years of peace and prosperity?
Viola Stephan turns the camera toward her closest female friends—some known since childhood, others from university and later stages of her life. With traditional middle-class structures dissolving and former female privileges relinquished without much resistance, the film asks how these women live today after decades of liberation and self-improvement.
Stephan draws on tendencies in contemporary documentary cinema in which autobiographical storytelling becomes a way of grasping the present. As she observes: “Cinematography, and documentary film in particular, is made to serve as historical memory and is especially suited to capturing the spirit of the times.”
Indeed, Ladies’ Choice conveys a vivid sense of the late 1990s, revealing what life looks like within a “relaxed bourgeoisie after all that freedom and self-determination.”
