ABC da greve was filmed in the late 1970s, when the industrial cities around São Paulo became the scene of an intense strike movement. Leon Hirszman, who at the time was working on the script for Eles não usam black-tie, took to the streets armed with portable 16mm equipment to observe the workers’ movement in the midst of building its political identity. Working in a cooperative system, with a small crew, Leon assembled his documentary day by day as events unfolded, recording some of the most striking images of this period. The intense reflection proposed by the documentary ended up becoming a kind of laboratory in preparation for the fictional work that Leon would later film, Eles não usam black-tie. The last edition of ABC da Greve was not completed until 1990 by the film’s photographer, Adrian Cooper, at the initiative of the Cinemateca Brasileira.
