Expanded cinema and sonic landscapes in heritage sites at Play-Doc

From May 7 to 11, the city of Tui will host a new edition of Play-Doc, one of the key events on Galicia’s film festival calendar. With a program known for its innovative spirit and artistic sensitivity, the festival also includes parallel events that explore new ways of engaging with cinema. This year’s edition presents two live performances that merge moving images with music and heritage, inviting audiences to experience cinema beyond the traditional movie theater.

Cinema Routes: A Two-Stop Drift

One of the festival’s most beloved activities, Cinema Tours, takes on a new format this year. Play-Doc will present two consecutive performances by Galician artists who reimagine cinema as a living experience through sound, image, and spatial transformation. The event will take place on Friday, May 9.

SACRO is a real-time audiovisual performance by musician Fon Román and filmmaker Oswaldo García, members of the collective FON_OS. Using a 3D scan of the Santo Domingo monument complex as a starting point, the piece transforms the Gothic church into a space of light and sound. Constantly shifting visual projections and live music come together in an artistic intervention that invites audiences to rediscover heritage from a new perspective.

N0WX, is a joint creation by sound artist Xoán-Xil López and filmmaker Iván Torres Hdez. Somewhere between expanded concert and audiovisual installation, the piece stems from research into former radio transmission sites across Galicia. Voices, frequencies, and static from long-gone broadcasts blend with analog projections to create a sonic and visual landscape that evokes obsolete technologies, echoes of the past, and invisible cartographies. A poetic work that uses sound as a tool to explore both territory and time.

Silent movies with live music in the Church of San Domingos

Play-Doc presents a unique cinematic experience taking place on May 10 and 11 at the Church of San Domingos in Tui. This monumental space will host screenings of two masterpieces of European Expressionism: The Phantom Carriage (1921), by Victor Sjöström, and Nosferatu (1922), by F.W. Murnau, accompanied by live music performed by renowned pianist and composer Filipe Raposo. Internationally acclaimed for his mastery in accompanying silent films, Raposo will perform original compositions on piano, reviving the tradition of a time when music was an essential part of cinematic storytelling.

Designated National Monument and Cultural Heritage Site, the Church of San Domingos provides a majestic setting for this program, where heritage, music, and moving images come together in an experience that transcends time.
