LIQUID GROUND

Enar de Dios, 31', 2021, Austria
Director: Enar de Dios
Music: nara is neus, Valentí Adell

Although the oceans make up more than 70% of the Earth’s surfice, until now only a very small part of the seabed has been mapped. However, in recent years, the mapping of these spaces has accelerated due to different economic, geopolitical and scientific interests, determined to build a “new continent” to be explored and exploited underwater. Liquid Ground is a video essay that uses the ocean floor and its current cartography to talk about colonialism, ecology and representation. Shaped by a wide variety of found material —from the illustrations of the first worldwide oceanographic expedition to current technologies and visions related to the ocean floor— Liquid Ground functions as a reminder of the liquid grounds that make up and sustain the planet. Moreover, it is a call to disobeying the stability of the arbitrary, extractive and limiting lines that are mapped across the world. Like any other form of knowledge, Liquid Ground is also a set of riddles.

The sparrows make their way through the machinery, into the exhaust pipes, the open engines or the seats of the cars on the third floor. In the early morning, when they hear the opening of the big gate, they fly quickly to get inside. Today the garage is a safe place for them, just as it was once for my father in the 1980s.

No river protects me from myself takes as its starting point the mysterious theft of filmed material shot in the Congo Basin rainforest. The material offers a response to conflicts arising from the fragile and transsubjective encounter with the “non-self”, which can only be practised or experienced: if you try to virtualise it, it ceases to exist.

Who is Sycorax? The first of all characters in William Shakespeare´s “The Tempest” to set foot on the island of the play.

The problem is that Sycorax has no voice. She is barely mentioned by Prospero as a crooked, old, wicked witch who vilely locked Ariel, the spirit of the air, in a tree.

But why would she lock Ariel in a tree? Here, we wouldn’t believe Prospero so much.
