ONE MAN IN THE BAND

Friday 20th/ 00:30h / sala Metropol
10€ (8€ with season ticket)

Sometimes music just sounds so much better when you make it on your own.

Forget any conceptions you might have about traditional one-man bands with drums on their backs and cymbals on their knees. The musicians in One Man in the Band are so cutting edge that they are sometimes unclassifiable. Come and see.

DURACELL

Duracell is a one-man band enigma. A technical innovator, he wires his drum kit with trigger microphones which enable him to play musical notes via a modular synthesiser. A consummate showman, he positions himself in the middle of the crowd and plays tunes inspired by computer games, driving himself into a frenzy for the audience's edification. It's high-tech, high-volume primitivism that demands a visceral reaction.

HONKEYFINGER

Blues sculpted from mud and electrified by the devil. A long history of playing in other bands led Honkeyfinger to turn his back on collaboration and strike out on his own. "I wanted to be a big ass dinosaur three-piece rock band like Blue Cheer or Cream. The revelation came that I could do it by myself. In my mind, I'm a three-piece band."His chosen weapon for this solo assault is the Hawaiian lap steel guitar, an instrument more often associated with tiki lounges and Spongebob Squarepants. In Honkeyfinger's fingers, its sound is heavily distorted, fuzzed up and 'skronked out'. With his stomping drumming, harmonica licks and special effects pedals, he is a one-man dynamo who regularly raises the roof.

THE TWO TEARS

Kerry Davis was in a succession of spiky, garage-rocking LA bands such as the Red Aunts and Beehive and the Barracudas before forming The Two Tears. At one time it had five members... but over the years the other members drifted away or gave up the rock ghost, until Kerry was left as the only regular member of The Two Tears. No matter – she is made of sterner stuff than that, so she packed her beat-up Gibson guitar, borrowed a kick drum and took to the road as a one-man band. Now The Two Tears lives a nomadic existence, playing sweet and savage songs of heartbreak and devastation.

THOMAS TRUAX

Being a one-man band doesn't mean that you have to play alone. New Yorker Thomas Truax despaired of keeping a band together through frugal financial times. He resorted to building his own backing musicians from junk shop booty. Key members include mechanical drum machine Sister Spinster, hard-drinking womaniser the Hornicator, the reticent snooze machine the Stringaling and the awkward-minded percussionist the Backbeater. He employs these and other contraptions as well as traditional instruments in exceptionally crafted, witty and often touching songs“Just a guitar set would disappoint people. This is my thing... my role is as a musical Dr Frankenstein." "
