Galician Panorama

There are not many territories that are able to display such a fertile, varied production as Galicia does. This year, again, this selection of works exemplifies that our territory is still in constant ferment: films that move between the portrayal of the reality that is closest to the director, as is one’s own daughter, or the search for a story in lands distant from or unrelated to the filmmaker, such as Equatorial Guinea. Works that bear more of a resemblance to canonical documentaries and others that are closer to experimental cinema make up this year’s selection.

The diversity of looks, forms and formats is the element that can best define the set of films that constitute the Galician panorama. There is no single pattern by means of which we can define the Galician production for this year. This is not a negative characteristic; rather the contrary, as it points to the existence of a rich, varied ecosystem. At the same time, we cannot but analyse these productions in a context in which these works that are part of our cinematic heritage are consigned solely and exclusively to a circuit, already precarious in itself, of festivals and shows scattered across our territory. In this regard, aware of our duty to give more prominence to these creators and be their allies, we are committed to making new creators known and reaffirming their importance in the formation of a plural, varied filmmaking structure and industry.

The echoes of an island remain in space and memory. The voices resound alive. A moment and a place; the living are shadows crossing the faded landscape of the cove. History alights on the present. History projects its lament. Three female troubadours. A device that captures the voice. A female painter that brings colour back. ‘They are fortunate islands, / They are lands without whereabouts, / Where the king dwells, waiting. But, if we start to awake, / The voice hushes and there is only the sea.’
